SUMMARY:Reopening after COVID-19: Ensuring Safe Water Supplies at the Building Scale
DESCRIPTION:The COVID-19 pandemic has led to sweeping closures of public buildings\, businesses\, offices\, and schools. With minimal water use\, water quality in building plumbing can degrade and foster the growth of the bacteria that cause Legionnaires’ disease\, a severe form of pneumonia. Legionnaires’ disease incidence has been increasing over the past few decades\, and without appropriate water management actions\, cases could increase sharply after schools and workplaces reopen.  A panel of experts will discuss the state of knowledge for building water management to protect public health when reopening after COVID-19. \n  \nRuth Berkelman\, Emory University\, moderator \nPanelists: \n\nChris Boyd\, Building Water Health Program\, NSF International\nDavid Krause\, HealthCare Consulting and Contracting\nAndrew Whelton\, Purdue University\n\n  \nKey questions for presentations and discussions: \n\nWhat are the water quality issues and related health risks associated with reopening buildings or larger office parks/campuses that have been shuttered or minimally used during the COVID-19 outbreak?\nAre there actions that could (should) be taken now to minimize current or future risk of water-related health risks?\nWhat guidelines are available for building owners and utilities?  What are the responsibilities of various entities?\nWhat issues about best practices for water management remain unresolved relative to building recommissioning?\nWhat issues need to be addressed to improve implementation of current guidelines (e.g.\, communication\, training)?\n\n

SUMMARY:Wastewater Monitoring for COVID-19 Disease Surveillance
DESCRIPTION:Wastewater Monitoring for COVID-19 Disease Surveillance \nResearchers around the world are currently exploring ways that wastewater samples can help us understand the spread of COVID-19 at a community scale.  The Water Science and Technology Board will host a panel discussion with experts on public health and wastewater monitoring to discuss the potential value of data on SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater to inform public health management and what is needed to build a useful surveillance network. \nDavid Sedlak\, UC Berkeley\, Moderator \nPanelists: \n\nVincent Hill\, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention\nBarry Liner\, Water Environment Federation\nGertjan Medema\, KWR Water Research Institute\, Holland\nNicole Rowan\, Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment\nKrista Wigginton\, University of Michigan\n\n  \nKey questions for presentations and discussions: \n\nHow can data on SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater be useful as an indicator of COVID-19 cases in a locality?\nHow has wastewater disease surveillance been useful with control of other viral pathogens? What problems have been encountered and what can we learn from these experiences for COVID-19?\nWhat is the capacity of current wastewater monitoring technologies for detecting COVID-19 disease outbreaks (i.e.\, what is the recovery efficiency\, detection rate relative to the loading rates)?  What are the costs?\nWhat technical challenges need to be addressed before this strategy can be broadly implemented as a robust tool?  What are the highest priority needs?\nWhere might such surveillance be appropriate?\nIs this a useful investment? If so\, what would the nation need to do to rapidly invest in a useful surveillance network?

SUMMARY:Inequalities of Air Pollution Exposures and Associated Health Effects in the U.S.
DESCRIPTION:A growing body of research has examined inequitable distribution of air pollution exposure across racial and socioeconomic groups in the United States. Questions remain about which population groups are inequitably exposed and likely to benefit from air quality improvements. This session will provide an overview of social determinants of health and exposure in the United States\, air pollution inequality research to date\, and applications in epidemiological research and policy decisions.

SUMMARY:Water Contaminant Information Tool
DESCRIPTION:The Water Contaminant Information Tool (WCIT) is a secure on-line database with comprehensive information about chemical\, biological and radiochemical contaminants of concern for the Water Sector. This tool compiles drinking water- and wastewater-specific data in a one-stop\, easy-to-use tool. \nCourse Description: The approximately one hour course covers everything from evaluating contamination early warning indicators to calculating the potential scope of contamination based on suspected quantities involved. The training is designed to introduce new users to WCIT\, as well as provide a refresher for current users. The course includes: \n\nA comprehensive overview of WCIT\nThe information WCIT contains\nHow the tool can be used\nThe benefits of use for different stakeholders\n\nThe training will include step-by-step instructions for tool functions such as contaminant search\, finding and accessing field and confirmatory methods\, generating public information reports and several other functions. \nA live demo of the tool will also be given\, so registrants without a WCIT account should sign up for an account at least one week before the scheduled date of the training. The course will be limited to twenty participants per training.

SUMMARY:Air Sensor Training: Building a Community Air Monitoring Network
DESCRIPTION:Tracking California will provide an overview of the process involved in developing a community air monitoring network\, based on our experience partnering with Comite Civico del Valle to establish a monitoring network that provides real-time information on particulate matter levels in Imperial County. The presentation will highlight a parallel process to the 14 elements laid out by the California Air Resources Board’s (CARB) community air monitoring plan and additional considerations from our “Guidebook for Developing a Community Air Monitoring Network.”
