Wildfire Smoke

In 2016, ERIS and ASTHO worked together with U.S. EPA to provide state environmental and health agency input into EPA’s Wildfire Smoke: A Guide for Public Health Officials. As wildfire smoke concerns have grown, that guide has been added AirNow and EPA has gathered wildfire resources in the Smoke Ready Toolbox.

As state concerns around wildfire smoke have grown, as reflected in biennial state research needs surveys, EPA’s Office of Research and Development has responded by hosting listening sessions on wildfire smoke concerns and by sharing research, tools, and resources through webinars including:

  • Wildfire Advancing Science Partnerships for Indoor Reductions of Smoke Exposures (ASPIRE) Study (May 2025)
  • Prescribed Burning and Smoke Management Planning (May 2024)
  • Beyond PM2.5: The Other Effects of Wildfires on Air and Water Quality (March 2024)
  • Cleaner Indoor Air During Wildfires Challenge: Phase II Winners (February 2024)
  • Wildland Fire Research to Protect Health and the Environment (March 2023)
  • Smoke Ready Communities Research Study (June 2022)
  • Preparing for Wildland Fire Smoke (May 2022)
  • How to Evaluate Air Sensors for Smoke Monitoring Applications (February 2022)
  • Strategies for Effective Health Risk Communication during Wildfire Smoke (September 2021)
  • AirNow Fire and Smoke Map: Extension of the US-Wide Correction for PurpleAir PM2.5 Sensors (May 2021)
  • Communicating Air Quality During Fires: The Science Behind the AirNow Sensor Data Pilot (January 2021)
  • Wildland Fire Community Engagement and Data Visualization Tools (May 2020)
  • Wildfires and the Community Health Vulnerability Index (May 2018)
  • Wildfire Smoke Emissions and Smoke Sense App (June 2017)
