Urban Heat Solutions

Extreme heat is one of the most pressing challenges facing cities today, requiring solutions that integrate science, planning, and community engagement.This webinar will highlight NOAA-supported research and partnerships that are advancing actionable solutions to extreme heat in urban environments. Speakers will share insights on:

  • how collaborative “heat lab” approaches are connecting researchers, practitioners, and communities to co-develop locally relevant solutions
  • how high-resolution data and mapping tools are helping cities identify heat exposure and target interventions
  • how planning tools can evaluate and strengthen the integration of heat resilience across policies and decision-making processes

Together, these presentations will show how cross-sector collaboration can support effective urban heat resilience.

Extreme Heat and Interconnected Hazards: New Research on Compounding and Cascading Impacts

Extreme heat rarely occurs in isolation. It often interacts with other hazards “such as drought, air pollution, and wildfires” resulting in greater risks to human health, infrastructure, and the economy. This webinar will highlight NOAA-supported research that has advanced our understanding of these compounding and cascading impacts of extreme heat. Speakers will share new insights on: how drought conditions intensify heat waves and increase exposure to extreme temperatures; how heat and humidity influence air quality and particulate matter formation; and how communities are strengthening household-level health protections during overlapping heat and wildfire smoke events.
